All About Us

GKW Consulting is a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) specialising in safety engineering, risk management, As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) risk assessments and business case investment support of high-integrity systems in both the private and public sectors. We have over 25-years of experience working with the biggest suppliers of services and equipment to defence and military organisations around the world. 

We provide independent advice and assurance to our customers to ensure that they provide the safest products and services to their clients in a low risk and sustainable manner.

The Technical Stuff

GKW Consulting specialises in the provision of safety engineering/ management advice and capabilities in accordance with leading industry best practice such as IEC 61508, IEC 61511, CS25/29, ARP 4761/4754, Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-55 and Mil-Std-882. We undertake safety programmes using techniques such as:

  1. Concept stage assessment of risks that may affect the initial business case for complex projects/ programmes to ensure that they pass their initial and main gate assessments.
  2. Identification of mandatory legislation and compliance strategies.
  3. Development and advice in developing Safety and Environmental Management Plans (SEMP).
  4. Chairing and facilitating Hazard Identification workshops using techniques such as Structured What IF Technique (SWIFT), Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS), etc.
  5. Undertaking safety analysis to determine the presence of hazards and accident sequences that can lead to risks, accidents and near-misses. We undertake techniques such as: Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Cause Consequence Analysis, Common Cause Analysis, Bowtie Analysis, Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and SIL Assessments.
  6. Hazard Log creation and management to track safety issues from identification to closure.
  7. Risk Assessment to ensure that risks are reduce to a tolerable level for our clients' industry regulations and their corporate risk appetite.
  8. As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) assessment, cost v benefit analysis and justification statements.
  9. Safety Case authoring including using graphical techniques such as Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) and Claims, Argument Evidence (CAE) techniques.


We also provide Independent Safety Advice, Assessment and Audit (ISA) services using our team of accredited auditors and industry leading experts.

Knowledge and Experience

We are a team of safety engineers, managers and defence industry experts who have worked on some of the world's biggest defence programmes and projects, such as:

  1. UK Royal Navy (RN) Astute and Dreadnought programmes: Platform Management Systems (PMS) and Turbine Generator Integrated Control and Safety (TGICS) system.
  2. UK Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Saudi Arabian Air Force (RSAF) Panavia Tornado: Successor Identification Friend or Foe (SIFF), Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), emergency egress systems, Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), Thermal Imaging and Laser Designator (TIALD) and various air launched weapon system trials.
  3. Eurofighter Typhoon: Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS), Flight Control System (FCS) and Engine Control System (ECS).
  4. British Army Warrior Armoured Vehicle: Chain Gun safety investigations, Manned Turret Integration Programme (MTIP) Technology Demonstrator and Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP).
  5. Oshkosh British Army Wheeled Tanker: All-terrain water tanker, fuel tanker and aircraft refueling variants.
  6. UK RN Type 45 Navigation and Radar systems
  7. British Army Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD)
  8. UK Joint Fire Initiative (JFI) and Artillery System-of-Systems (SofS)
